Point Score System

                                                                How Pointscore Works.

Definition:

The basis of the Pointscore competition remains that which has been published on the NSWPF website for many years.

The points to be allocated to competitors will depend on the number (N) of competitors who have completed at least one flight in the event. A competitor has completed a flight if he registers a score greater than zero (0).

A) Scoring System used where N>20

The bonus for a field greater than 21 is defined as follows:

A bonus of 8 points is given to the first placed competitor; 5 points to the second placed and 3 points to the third.

B) Scoring System used where N<=20

The bonus for a field smaller than 21 is defined as follows:

- For first place: N/3 rounded up to the nearest whole number of points, with a maximum of 7 points;

- For second place: N/5 rounded up to the nearest whole number of points, with a maximum of 4 points;

- For third place: N/7 rounded up to the nearest whole number of points, with a maximum of 3 points.

Reason for the Change

• With the demise of the previous calculation spreadsheet, and with it the history of how previous results were calculated, it meant starting the development of a replacement from scratch.
• When it was attempted to recalculate results from previous seasons, working from first principles, it proved impossible to duplicate the results published. This suggested that errors might have crept into either the interpretation of the rules, or the calculation of the results.
• The system for resolving ties was very complex, and labour intensive, and did not lend itself to placing the system on spreadsheet to simplify the operation.
• There was no provision in the system to cope with occasions when an unequal number of rounds are flown by different classes. This would yield distorted results.
• The calculation had to be able to equitably cater for the move towards running a mixture of one-and two-day competition weekends.

With this taken into account, the decision was taken in 2019 to revamp Pointscore.

Rules Moving Forward

• The NSWPF Pointscore Competition will run across the 10 (or 11) monthly competition weekends run by NSWPF during a calendar year. Only these competitions will be included. However, where competitors from out-of-state participate in these competitions, their results will be included in the format.
• The allocation of points will be according to the system as set out in the Definition
• The ranking of competitors across all classes will be based on their normalised competition scores, as determined by the Notauscore system.
• Although the move to Notauscore has significantly reduced the number of ranking ties, where these do occur in the ranking, they will be resolved as follows:
  • Where there are ties in the normalised scores, tied competitors will be awarded the same position, and earn the same Competition points. The following position will be awarded as if there had not been a tie, and will earn the points appropriate for that position
  • For example, in a field of 10 competitors flying 6 rounds, the following normalised scores are recorded for the first 6 places: 5123, 5080, 5000, 5000, 4995, 4950.
  • These would be ranked 1, 2, 3, 3, 5, 6, and would earn 10, 9, 8, 8, 6, 5 competition points.
• In addition to the points from competition rankings, competitors will also earn bonus points, depending on the position attained in their class. These are added to the ranking points to yield the competitor’s final score.
• While the possibility of ties in the class positions is extremely unlikely, they will be resolved as above if encountered.
• Where unequal numbers of rounds are flown by classes, scores will be aligned by “re-normalising to the same number of rounds.
  • Assume 4 rounds flown by all competitors, but a 5^th round by Sportsman.
  • Normalised scores 1-4 are: 4000 (Sportsman 1); 3950 (Sportsman 2); 3153(F3A 1);  3050(F3A 2)
  • Results for Sportsman are “re-normalised” by dividing by 4 and multiplying by 3. Scores now read:   3153(F3A 1); 3050(F3A 2); 3000 (Sportsman 1); 2962.5 (Sportsman 2). This is a more equitable result, as it reflects actual performance, and not the anomalous number of rounds.
• Where 2 x 1-day competitions are run in one weekend, they will be treated as such, and Pointscore will be updated for both competitions individually.
• The final competitor’s scores from each monthly competition are added to give the final Pointscore totals and positions.
• Again, where ties occur in the cumulative points totals, these will be resolved in the same way as above.
• The Pointscore totals and positions will be calculated after each competition, and the latest cumulative results published on the website.
• After the final competition of the calendar year, (usually the NSW Championships), the final points, positions and winner will be calculated immediately the results are available, and announced at the prize giving, if at all possible.
